Breast Milk Storage in India: Summer, Power Cuts and Travel Guide
Share
The quick answer: Freshly expressed breast milk can stay at room temperature (up to 25°C) for up to 4 hours, in the fridge for up to 4 days, and in the freezer for about 6 months for best quality. If your room is hotter than 25°C, as most Indian homes are in summer, don't leave milk out. Cool it quickly in the fridge or an insulated bag with ice packs.
These are general guidelines for healthy, full-term babies. We explain each one below, plus what to do during a power cut and while travelling. (Source: CDC, Proper Storage and Preparation of Breast Milk.)
Breast Milk Storage Times at a Glance
| Where you keep it | Temperature | Freshly expressed milk |
|---|---|---|
| Room | Up to 25°C | Up to 4 hours |
| Insulated cooler with ice packs | About 5–15°C | Up to 24 hours |
| Fridge (back, not the door) | 4°C or colder | Up to 4 days |
| Freezer (not the door) | -18°C or colder | About 6 months best, up to 12 months acceptable |
Thawed milk: use within 24 hours if thawed in the fridge. Once you start a feed, finish it within 1–2 hours and throw away what's left. Never refreeze thawed milk.
Indian Summer: What to Do When the Room Is Hot
- Don't count on the 4-hour rule. It's for rooms up to about 25°C. In a 35°C Delhi or Chennai afternoon, bacteria grow faster, so get the milk cooled within the hour.
- Cool first, then store. Put freshly pumped milk in the fridge right away. Don't leave it on the table while you finish your chai.
- Wash and dry your hands and pump parts every time. Clean parts matter as much as the temperature.
- Keep the milk away from the sun and the window. A cool, shaded spot is better than a warm kitchen counter.
Power Cuts: Will the Milk Be Safe?
General food-safety guidance says a closed fridge keeps food cold for about 4 hours, and a full freezer for about 48 hours (24 hours if half full). Here's how to make that time count:
- Keep the fridge and freezer doors shut as much as possible.
- Move your milk to the back, away from the door.
- If the cut is long, put frozen milk in an insulated bag with ice packs.
- Frozen milk with ice crystals still in it can usually go back in the freezer once power returns. If it has fully thawed and warmed up, use it within 24 hours or discard it.
- If you aren't sure how long the milk stayed warm, it's safer to throw it away.
If you pump during a power cut, a rechargeable pump helps a lot, as long as it's charged. Plan your pumping around it and keep the pump charged overnight.
Travelling With Breast Milk (Train, Car, Flight)
- Use an insulated bag with frozen ice packs. Milk stays safe in it for up to 24 hours.
- Keep the milk in small, sealed portions with the date written on each.
- Ask hotels or friends' homes to keep your milk in their fridge.
- On flights, carry milk in your hand luggage and tell the security staff. Check your airline's rules before you fly.
Simple Storage Tips That Save Milk
- Store in small portions. 60–120 ml per bag or container, so you waste less.
- Label with the date and time. Use the oldest milk first.
- Leave some room at the top. Milk expands when it freezes.
- Don't add warm milk to frozen milk. Cool fresh milk in the fridge first.
- Thaw slowly. Overnight in the fridge, or under warm running water. Never use a microwave or boiling water. See our guide on what temperature breast milk should be heated to, and how to warm baby milk without a stove.
Fresh milk can separate into a cream layer. That's normal. Swirl it gently. If it smells sour or looks off, don't use it.
Pumping Often? Make the Routine Easier
If you pump every day, a rechargeable double electric pump can cut the time you spend per session, which also means less time worrying about storage. Read our honest guide on single vs double breast pumps, or meet NestFlow, our USB rechargeable double pump with 3 modes and 9 levels each.

Questions Moms Ask Us
How long can breast milk stay out in summer in India?
Up to 4 hours only if the room is 25°C or cooler. In a hotter room, put the milk in the fridge or a cooler bag as soon as you can, ideally within the hour.
Can I store breast milk without a fridge?
For a short time, yes. Use an insulated bag with frozen ice packs. It stays safe for up to 24 hours. Without ice packs, don't store it for more than a short while in a hot room.
Can I mix milk from different pumping sessions?
Yes, if you cool the fresh milk first. Don't pour warm milk into already cold or frozen milk. Write the date of the oldest milk on the container.
Why does my thawed milk smell soapy?
Some frozen milk smells soapy or metallic because of natural enzymes. It's often still safe. If it smells sour or rotten, throw it away.
Can I refreeze thawed breast milk?
No. Once thawed, use it within 24 hours and don't put it back in the freezer.
Is it okay to warm milk in the microwave?
No. Microwaves heat unevenly and can leave hot spots that may burn your baby's mouth. Use warm water instead.
Do these times apply to premature or sick babies?
Not always. If your baby was premature or is unwell, ask your doctor or NICU team what to follow.
The Bottom Line
Cool it fast, store it small, label it, and when in doubt, throw it out. Your milk is precious, and so is your baby's safety.
